Volunteering with Blue Ridge Care

Volunteers provide service in every department of our organization. In 2025, our dedicated, generous volunteers provided 19,555 hours of service — this helped the organization save approx. $673,000 in expenses.

The application process to be a volunteer with us includes filling out an application, completing a background check, and completing the role-appropriate training (the required hours of training varies depending on the volunteer role).

Volunteer Roles

Tuck-In Program

Tuck-in program volunteers are needed to make calls to our patients and caregivers each week to ensure they have everything they need for the weekend. It’s just one more way we stay connected to those who depend on us for care.  

Thrift Shops

Blue Ridge Hospice Thrift Shops are located in Berryville, Front Royal, Purcellville, Leesburg, Strasburg, Stephens City, and Winchester, VA. Thrift Shop Volunteers assist with receiving, sorting, tagging, and displaying donated items as well as assisting customers.

Patient/Family Support

Patient/family support volunteers provide one-on-one emotional support and companionship to our patients and their families. Friendly visits, life review, respite to caregivers, transportation, and assistance with errands are just a few of the many ways in which volunteers brighten the lives of our patients.

Pet Therapy

Pet Therapy Volunteers provide companionship to patients and family members through scheduled pet visits. Pets participating in the Pet Therapy Volunteer Program must meet specific criteria prior to their first visit.  

Administrative Support

Administrative Support Volunteers assist in the Reception, Medical Records, Marketing, and Volunteer Departments, manning the switchboard, filing, copying, data entry, charting, and other similar activities.  

Community Event and Fundraising

Community Event and Fundraising Volunteers assist Blue Ridge Hospice staff with fundraising events and other community activities. This is a great opportunity for those with busy schedules to donate their talents to hospice and maintain a flexible volunteer schedule. Also a great opportunity for large groups or clubs to get involved. 

Vigil – Eleventh Hour

Vigil Volunteers provide a caring presence to patients in the last hours of life. Vigil volunteers are assigned when patients are alone, or in cases where family members need additional support during the last moments of their loved ones’ lives. Vigil volunteers are “on call” and may need to be available during the night and on weekends and holidays.  

Reiki Therapy

Reiki therapy volunteers provide a gentle form of energy therapy to Blue Ridge Hospice patients. Reiki can increase energy flow and promote relaxation, alleviate pain, and help release anxiety, fear and grief. Reiki services may be especially beneficial to patients who are sensitive to touch.

Pampering & Hairstylists

Volunteer licensed hairstylists volunteer their time to visit patients in their homes, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and in the Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center, to provide cut and styling services.
